AbstractThe aim of this master thesis was to research the attitudes of parents in Austria regarding the change in gender roles within their own families. The focus lies on whether they perceive a change and in which form. Furthermore it was of interest which alterations are made through utilisation of parental leave regarding the distribution of gender roles at home and which distinctions exist between different models of parental leave. For this purpose, a review of current regulations regarding the parental leave in Austria and also other countries was made. The results of the literature research show, that there is an ongoing change from a traditional role model to a more egalitarian. Fathers are willing to play a more active role in their family lives, but there is a discrepancy between their desired and their actual participation regarding child care and housework. To take a further look at this change a theoretical approach via sociology of gender was chosen. With the application of the theoretical concepts ªDoing Genderº, ªHegemonic Masculinityº and ªDoing Familyº, the key concept of masculinity and the dynamic character of family were defined. The question of fatherly participation at home was perceived further through empirical research. Methodologically an approach through qualitative couple-interviews and the thematic network analysis, following Attride-Stirlings method, was taken. The results show, that the birth of a child into a family is connected with a (unconscious) decline of egalitarian division of housework, which parents try to regain through negotiation processes. The traditional role model works as a reference whether parents themselves try to fulfil a traditional role model or not. The perception of the change in gender roles is more prominent during paternal leave than during and after a ªPapamonatº. The management of time is crucial on every intra-familial level.
